The Board of Supervisors agreed Monday to consider a proposal from BFI Waste Systems of Northern Virginia to build a waste transfer station for the county and handle the county’s recycling for less than it will cost the county to develop a new landfill cell.
However, the supervisors also agreed to proceed as quickly as possible to seek state approval for plans for the new cell.
Paul Gilbert from BFI said if the county entered into a long-term contract with his company to handle the county’s trash, the company could handle the trash for less than the $71 per ton the county is paying for the landfill.
He said it would cost somewhere between $50 and $60 per ton with BFI depending on what services the county requested. He said the company could supply two convenience centers with compactors as well as the transfer station and a staging area for collecting recvclables to take to the company’s recycling center at Newington. BFI already has access to two landfills that meet all current guidelines, Mr. Gilbert said.
