Frank Gannon noted that President Clinton had tried to cut subsidies to the REA in his budget, but Congress insisted they be left in.
Jay Katzen, the Republican candidate for the 31st House District, said he would be willing to set up a meeting with 10th Dist. Rep. Frank Wolf when the congressman visits Front Royal this Friday.
Harold Parker noted that Virginia Power had tried to purchase territory from Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, REC’s parent company, but had not been successful.
“That’s a perfect example,” Nancy Raines said. “We have two investor owned utilities (Virginia Power and Potomac Edison) who can provide the service, but this dinosaur is in the way. ”
Several landowners are also exploring the possibility of donating secnic easements on their property to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. The VOF board was scheduled to meet this Tuesday to consider whether to proceed with these donations. Scenic easements would prohibit new transmission lines and other non-agricultural uses of the land.
