He was intelligent, however, and had a tall powerful physique but he was trapped by circumstances. There was no escaping labor in others’ fields for pay that barely permitted survival, and no possiblity for many years of living in anything but tenant shacks that he would have to leave when he was no longer needed.
The assaults on his dignity were many. When his mother was dying, for example, he went to his employer for some ice to cool her forehead, ice from the pit Marshall had filled the previous winter. The boss made him do a chore first, to earn the ice, and by the time Marshall was able to return, his mother was dead.
The most remarkable aspect of this gentle man’s personality was that he was not bitter toward those who mistreated him and he acknowledged that not all did. He received many kindnesses as well. He regretted some of the things done to him but, incredibly, was able to forgive those who had wronged him.
He was no fool; he recognized wrhen someone was trying to take advantage of him and dealt with the situation as best he could.
