Board Chairman Kathleen Seefeldt pointed out that zoning fees are applied only to specific projects, therefore the reduction in fees would not affect any other county services.
Dumfries Supervisor Maureen Caddigan and Woodbridge Supervisor Hilda Barg defended the fee reduction based on its projected economic benefits. “We must be competitive,” said Ms. Caddigan. “We cannot continue to be a bedroom community,” said Ms. Barg. “We must do something about these . high fees.”
Chris Needels of the Piedmont Environmental Council reiterated PEC’s position that the group is not against the project, only its location. “As a taxpayer I feel it is unconscionable that the Board of Supervisors would even consider a $400,000 fee reduction, when it is already facing a budget shortfall over the next year.” he said. “Disney can surely pay the very first fee that it is asked to pay."
Eliot, when questioned about his group said that he preferred not to give specifics about the group because there had been death threats and threats of physical, violence.
