at interstate ramps nationwide. A significant percentage of these accidents was caused by trucks jackknifing or rolling over. In 1990 alone, the human loss was 80 fatalities and about 3,600 personal injuries. The economic loss from these accidents involving prolonged traffic tie-ups and damage to roadways, was a staggering $500 million.
“This technology testing is relatively inexpensive-about $525,000 to test three Capital Beltway ramps,” stated Commonwealth Transportation Commissioner Ray D. Pethtel. “According to the FHWA, if this technology prevents one fatal accident on any of these three ramps every five years, we not only will have saved life, the three ramp systems will have paid for themselves.”
“This equipment probably is useful on any kind of loop of ramp where there is a turning motion involved, or where the truck, because of its height and weight shifts, could flip over,” Pethtel concluded.
