Just about everyone has seen a book for beginning artists that shows how to draw animals and people starting with geometric shapes, particularly circles and ovals.
Using this technique most can produce drawings that look more like the intended object than they could just drawing freehand.
However, it is not necessarily easy to produce the shapes. The circles may not be perfectly round or may not be the right size. The ovals may not be regular and may not be set at the right angle. The drawing produced is not quite what the artist imagined.
Sixth grader Marshall Gangel found such a book and applied what he had learned in the local computer camp in the summer of 1992 to solve the problem.
With his father School Superintendent David Gangel, Marshall submitted an article “Can You Draw Like This?” which was published in the November issue of The Computing Teacher: Journal of the International Society for Technology in Education.
“As a non artist, it seems to me that the most difficult part of using basic geometric shapes as a basis for drawing figures is drawing well-proportioned geometric shapes initially,” Dr. Gangel wrote. “If one can’t draw figures (animals and people), one probably cannot draw geometric shapes either.
