The junior varsity and varsity basketball teams were on a roll, after defeating Page on Friday and Luray on Saturday. — Then they came up against Madison on Monday and the varsity lost 75-50.
Coach Gary Leake said, “They were playing extremely tired because of playing two games over the weekend. The varsity played quite well in the first quarter, then had three turnovers in the second half. After that, they could not regroup.” p Jason Brown played very well, though, and scored 11 points. “He was well rested. We had saved him fri)m the prior two games, so he Wbuld have energy for this one. He handled the pressure well,” said Coach Leake.
The junior varsity lost by two jibints Monday night. “Both teams had a terrible night at the free throw line. That is a sign of fatigue,” said Coach Leake. -c The junior varsity beat Page on Friday, 54-35. Coach Leake said, “It, was a really good group effort. We scored 20 points in the third quarter, and all the players were very positive.” Jon Butler was the leading Scorer with 21 points, and Chris McLear scored 12 points in the first three quarters. Chris suffered a cut near his right eye which forced him to sit out the remainder of the game. ” The varsity edged out Page 4039.' “We had a balanced scoring attack, with a lot of hustling and leadership. We stalled the ball for five minutes near the end of the third quarter for two reasons. We tried to hold the ball because of our foul trouble. Also, we had a major momentum swing and we wanted to slow (hem down, to keep Page from scoring against us,” said Coach Leake. The strategy worked.
Main scorers for the game were Ray Atkins with ten points, Andre Fletcher and Jonathan Fletcher with eight points each, and Jason Brown with seven points.
