Our next stop, though we did not visit the chateau, was Chinon, which is more accurately a massive fortified castle carved out of the rocky ledge looming over the medieval town by the same name on the Vienne River. You can get excellent views from the town’s streets.

Equally fascinating were the enormous caves filled with wine you can buy under the fort. Joan of Arc passed through the 1429, meeting with Charles Vll and the spot where she supposedly placed her foot (the lip of a well) to descend from her horse is dulv marked.
