Our last full day of vacation was spent walking around the charming inner-most part of the city and then we bu/./ed down to St. Jean de Luz along the Cote Basque. The coastal road is crowded with vehicular traffic and there are only a very few views of the dramatic high cliffs and rolling waves, but St. Jean de Luz is an appealing Basque town and worth the trip. It's on a sheltered bay with a pleasant beach and several areas are set aside as pedestrian-only. The town is full of shops and restaurants, and while eating lunch (delicious fish soup filled with all kinds of locallycaught seafood) we watched the lively local color, including many young men wearing the traditional white shirt with red bandanna and black Basque beret.
