News that the new cell at the landfill will soon be taking trash is welcome. Amazing delays have plagued every stage of the process.
In spite of state assurance that the much higher fees for permit applications would mean faster action, approval took well more than a year.
Then actual construction was delayed first for the hunting season, then for winter weather, and finally for summer rains.
With the new cell open the county will begin imposing a tipping fee on commercial haulers. The supervisors need to get on with the process of establishing a central, controlled location for recycling and residential trash disposal. Otherwise commercial haulers are likely to start using the dumpster sites for disposal to escape the tipping fees. This will significantly increase the taxpayers expense for trash disposal.
