The next day we picked up the A10 again and headed south from chateaux country , stopping for lunch in Poitiers with time out to view the Romanesque church there. Then we continued the easy drive to the port city of LaRochelle. After checking into our small hotel (The Maybelle Iribe, run by a San Franciscan by that name), we walked around the port constructed by Eleanor of Aquitaine and once protected with large-scale fortifications built by the English.
