Richard L. Heflin, Jr., reproduces, in walnut, cherry and mahogany, furniture we associate with colonial times. A Chippendale chair, smaller in size than most of the original side chairs that inspired it, displays excellent workmanship and design that confer on the piece dignity and authority.
An ornate, elaborately contoured bombe chest, also smaller than similar antique pieces, would have been judged, in the past, a “Master Piece.” This chest was awarded the first prize by the show’s judge. While not inappropriate for the chest, 1 felt the prominent brass handles and lock faces slightly over assertive. The delightful richness of Heflin’s finishes shows just another facet of this tpeticulous and expert craftsman.
