With a previous book, John Beardsley brought together photographs and accounts of artists who produced Earthworks, large scale artistic inventions on a landscape. These productions also surprise with their scale and conceptions.
I think of the audacity of the park inventors of the 19th century who thought Central Park in New York, and the parks of London and Paris were important for city dwellers. The designers of these conventional parks tend to be forgotten by the parks’ beneficiaries, while those who construct Gardens of Revelation impress one with their individual inspiration and artistic courage.
John Beardsley is a resident, with his wife and children, of a farm in Amissville, a retreat for their family from work in the District of Columbia. He has been a curator for a number of art shows both in Washington and elsewhere and has been on the staff of the Hirshhorn Museum and The Corcoran Gallery of Art.
His books, Gardens of Revelation and Earthworks are on display at the library, and his current book will be on sale when he speaks.
