I High School Sports
* It is rather baffling that the Virginia High School League wants
take schools playing in districts with eight to ten teams and instead put them into districts of six teams.
Most schools schedule 10 football games and 20 basketball games in a season. Under the best of circumstances, six-team districts will mean only five football games and 10 basketball games in district competition, leaving schools hustling to fill their schedules with non district competition. '* If Rappahannock County High School indeed ends up in a district with only three other schools, that will mean for the other schools only two district football games, and for all the schools only six basketball games in district competition. * Only one proposal among those being considered by VHSL principals and athletic directors would put Rappahannock into a district with Madison, the closest single A school.
The reason RCHS is competing with schools in Falls Church, Prince William County and Manassas Park is that these are the only small public high schools in Northern Virginia, and Rappahannock is their closest competition. That being the case, the VHSL should at least also include in the district Clarke County and the three high schools in Shenandoah County, which have been Rappahannock’s traditional rivals. That would make up an eight-school district and make scheduling much easier for everyone.
