Mr. Katzen stated that the Commonwealth of Virginia increased spending over the last 12 years, but he does not tell you that the cost of prison projects authorized in 1992 is $719 million of that increased expense. He also does not tell you that since 1990 the Commonwealth’s two and four year colleges have had budget cuts on nearly $500 million. Mr. Katzen wanted that important budget item cut even more. It is interesting to note that even very conservative business leaders urge more spending for education.
May I quote Mr. Republican, John T. Hazel, “the negativism of building houses of correction must give way to substantial increases in higher education spending.” The conservatives are donating money to Sue Scheer’s campaign because they recognize that Mr. Katzen is not in their camp.
