Ms. Maier said the Comprehensive Plan clearly calls for keeping the roads as they are, but "it seems in reality we are at the mandates of VDOT authorities unless there is a public hearing as in the case of Route 630. Perhaps we need to focus on greater communication between VDOT regional planners and our boards," she added.
Ms! Maier said more effort should be put into involving the public in the six-year road plan. "Even though there may be advertisements or easy access to the plan through the zoning office, unfortunately many people remain uninformed of changes until it is too late."
She said that the rural character of the roads is important to the tourist trade and cited the Fodderstack Road as an example.
