It brings an ache in the hearts and tears to the eyes of hundreds.
On Thursday, Oct. 24, 70 years after his birth, Mr. Nichols will be honored with a traditional church service. The 1 p.m. service will be conducted by Rev. Jennings Hobson at Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington, in a sanctuary where Mr. Nichols spent more than 43 years, a place where his children, his grandchildren and his godchildren were baptized. It is a place where he knelt each Sunday, taking the faithful back pew which was affectionately known as "Paul's seat."
Due to the size of the anticipate ed crowd, the parish hall will also be used and the service televised via cameras. Following the service a reception will be held at the church.
