Professor Ronald L. Heinemann of Hampden-Sydney College will speak to the Rappahannock Historical Society at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3.
The Historical Society's meeting will take place at the Rappahannock County Library, just east of the Town of Washington on U.S. 211. The meeting is open to the general public.
Professor Heinemann, a 1961 graduate of Dartmouth College, is the author of Harry Byrd of Virginia, a recent biography of Virginia Governor and United States Senator Harry Rood Byrd Sr. Prof. Heinemann, who received his doctorate at the University of Virginia, is known nationally as an expert on the New Deal era and twentieth century Virginia history.
Dr. Heinemann will outline Byrd's career, which encompassed over 60 years in public life, including service as a State Senator representing the Winchester area, a term as chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party, a term as Governor of Virginia from 1926 to 1930 and over five terms in the United States Senate.
Sen. Byrd died in 1965 at his home, Rosemont, near Benyville in Clark County.
Sen. Byrd was the leader of Virginia's renowned "Byrd organization," which was often referred to by its critics as "The Byrd Machine." His position as the titular head of Virginia's conservative Democratic organization was solidified during his term as the chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party in the early 1920s. He went on to
