Our Virginia granddaughter, who will be 15 in late November, spent the past weekend with us.
She can't vote until the year 2000, but she asked why I favored DoleKemp. My answer follows:
Dear Johanna,
To help you understand why I favor the Dole-Kemp team in 1996, a few words about what's important in making a choice between candidates and parties.
From your first vote, four years hence, to your last, two main factors will determine your choice in elections: first, philosophy of government, which tells you what he or she believes governments should dc second, character, which tells you what sort of person you are choosing. Here a word of warning: don't expect perfection or full knowledge of anyone or his ideas. But every candidate has a record, a reputation, so you can judge character.
