Scott Updike of Washington a senior at Wakefield School in The Plains was named a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program based on his outstanding performance on the Preliminary Aptitude ' Test (PSAT).
He' now proceeds to the finalist level of competition for scholarships that will be awarded next April.
"The Wakefield faculty and Scott's ’ fellow students join me in congratulating him on this well-earned honor," Headmaster Peter Quinn said. "Scott's performance on this pre-SAT exam was superior. Out of 32,000 Virginia students who took the test, he scored among the top 60 in the state. We are very proud of Scott and wish him the best as he continues in this academic year's National Merit competition."
In a telephone interview Scott said that when he was coming out of the test last fall, "I thought I'd done fairly well. I didn't think I'd do that well."
He said in the month leading up to the test his English class had spent two class periods a week working on test problems. That and the demanding vocabulary study at Wakefield helped him sith the test, Scott said.
