Mr. Nichols joined the Rappahannock County School Board in 1954. He served until his death, with a brief four-year reprieve. "He was sorely missed," said Mrs. Massie of Mr. Nichols’s time away from the board. He ran for election in the November 1995 campaign, winning his seat for a ninth term. Over those years he saw a tremendous change in the education in Rappahannock County.
His interest and concern for his fellow man motivated Mr. Nichols to care for his community. Extending it into the future, Mr. Nichols became a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America, taking his tenure into
