Pointing to his seat on four other standing committees, including the Environment and Public Works Committee, which is responsible for transportation spending, the senator implied that a loss for John Warner would hurt the Commonwealth the most in terms of seniority.
"A freshman would have just two [committee] seats," he said.
Many Republican loyalists still blame John Warner for Oliver North's failed bid in the 1994 U.S. Senate election. Sen. Wamei says, "In my campaigning today. I've only seen vestiges of that problem."
The senator sticks by his decision to back independent candidate Marshall Coleman over North, the Republican conservative.
And Sen. Warner said "in no way" is he distancing himself from the Republican leadership to win independent voters and independent-leaning Democrats.
