Apple orchardist Tom Lee, who has been working in the apple business since picking apples as a 6-year-old, said it has been 20 to 25 years since apples have sold so well as they have this season.
Though the crop has been short overall, he said, sales to processors in Winchester and sales from their apple shed on U.S. S22 near Massies Comer 3 have been really good. Most of the east coast, said Mr. Lee, did not produce crops as good as here in Rappahannock. Part of this was due to many trees being knocked over by Hurricane Fran.
Alex Sharp, who manages his own orchard in Harris Hollow and manages orchards at Mt. Vernon in Sperryville, Mellen in Flint Hill and Huntly and Sunnyside in Harris Hollow, agreed that crop tonnages were down from last year. His orchards averaged 40
