He watched as more than 40 of his boys became Eagle Scouts and cared for more than 500 boys as they entered his Troop 36.
The tan uniform became as familiar a symbol for Mr. Nichols as his coffee cup and his conversation.
"The leaders are going to miss him as much as the Scouts," said fellow Scoutmaster and leader Eddie Thompson of Front Royal.
Mr. Nichols was a regular at Camp Rock Enon from 1947, attending nearly every year of his life until the end. He camped every woods he could find, teaching boys to persevere and survive. "His claim to fame was that he could cook an egg in a paper bag," laughed Mr. Thompson, saying Mr. Nichols did it every time, showing Boy Scouts that anything was possible with determination.
