Mark Warner makes a very appealing case for his election to the U.S. Senate. He is young and energetic, and he seems to understand the challenges that come with global competition.
However, Virginia cqntinues to need John Warner. Four years ago candidate Bill Clinton promised to move submarine building to Groton, Conn. Sen. Warner fought to keep this work in Newport News, Va., and with those contracts the many jobs that result. His success in ensuring that half the subs will continue to be built at Newport News and that the bases in Hampton Roads remain open affects even Rappahannock County. Major cutbacks in defense spending in Virginia could well seriously damage the state's economy, with less money coming into the treasury in Richmond to be spent in the localities on schools and other state services.
John Warner personifies the highest qualities of character and political independence, is a giant credit to Virginia in the U.S. Senate and has earned the continued loyalty and support of the people of Rappahannock County.
