Eddie Williams of Williams Orchards in Flint Hill said they've had a very good crop and will be finished picking their York apples, the last of the crop, this week. He estimates the demand for apples this year has increased at least twofold, maybe threefold.
The Williamses sell at their farm on Route 729 in Flint Hill, at stands in Warrenton and Tyson's Comer and to a processor in Winchester.
Though this has been a good sales year, Tom Lee likes to talk about how the county was covered with apple orchards in the past. "This whole county used to be nothing but orchards," he said. All of the mountains land used to be orchards, and now that they are not," he said, the deer come down to the orchards that are left and are a big problem. "I don't think there will ever be the apples there were in the country," he said.
