The community lost a hero this week, a woman who dedicated her life to the education of the children of Rappahannock — Mary Botts Miller Quaintance-Snead. She died Sunday at Overlook Nursing Home. She was the widow of Raymond G. "Dike" Quaintance Jr. and Dr. John R Snead III.
Mrs. Snead knew, really knew, virtually every face who passed through the doors of Rappahannock's schools from 1925 to 1977 _ when she retired as principal of Rappahannock County Elementary School, a position she held for 22 years.
