Mamie Baxley
Mamie Maxfield Yates Baxley, 99, of The Virginian in Fairfax, formerly of Hume, died Sunday, Jan. 26 at The Virginian.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 30 at Flint Hill Methodist Church by the Rev. Merlin Shorb.
Interment was at Leeds Episcopal Church in Markham by the Rev. Linnea Turner.
Mrs. Baxley was bom June 19, 1897, in Flint Hill, daughter of the late Charles J. and Juliet Beckham Yates.
She was a 1915 graduate of Hume High School, where she was valedictorian and taught briefly.
She attended Mary Baldwin College and was believed to be its oldest living alumna.
She was a member of Flint Hill Methodist Church and her allegiance centered on Leeds Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir, served on the Altar Guild and was chairman of the United Thank Offering for 50 years.
She was a founding member of the Blue Ridge Flower Club and was active in many other community projects.
She was the wife of the late, Henry L. Baxley Sr.
Surviving are a son, Henry L. Baxley Jr. of Marshall; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Arrangements were handled by Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton.
