One of the second prize awards, given by Mr. Klein, a concert pianist who is also a former music critic for The New York Times, went to Don Becker's "Merman," one of three marionettes. The other two are "Green Winged Frog" and "Clown with Balancing Pole."
Another second prize award went to Jerry Coulter for his painting "Festival Fish" which also included strips of paper making a collage. Mr. Coulter also has two other paintings in the show "Truth Draws a Line II" and "Dead Mouse," a small painting of a mouse caught in a trap.
A final second prize went to Rene Ruffner's "Icon” an oil painting with the feel of a Russian icon.
The show invited*artists to bring their own interpretations of "Small" to the works they submitted. In the past the gallery has staged a "One Square Foot" show with that limitation on size. This year there were no dimensional restrictions. Mr. Klein wrote, "A question was asked of the artists. What is small? The artists answered by presenting their interpretations of the word, definitions couched in various genres and styles from representational to abstract in a rich variety of mediums."
