Sixth and seventh graders from the elementary school were noisily present Friday when the mostly 8th grade Junior Panthers lost to the Strasburg Rams 70-39.
In spite of the loss. Coach Reed Gillespie said, "That was the best game we've played." Mark Wharton was the Panther's high scorer.
The elementary school students were present as part of an "Incentive Program" that was introduced this year. Assistant principal Richard Smith said about 85 percent of the sixth and seventh graders have signed up for the program. Those in the program are students whose parents have agreed they can be kept after school if their behavior requires it. In exchange if they "follow the rules" and their behavior does not require any after-school detention, they get to attend a party at the end of every four we£ks.
This was the second time their "party" had involved attending a Junior Panther game, Mr. Smith said. Another party included a "menu day," in which they could choose between line dancing and "smash ball" indoors or softball and soccer outside.
Out of 150 students, only four were not invited to attend Friday's game, Mr. Smith explained. All the sixth and seventh-grade teachers and many of the "enrichment teachers" were also at the game. One sixth
