So far as I can tell, James Bland never set foot in Virginia, but he was a person of great distinction and talent living in an era where there were few alternatives for black entertainers but performing in minstrel shows which were racially degrading.
Since we are consigning Bland's song about Virginia to oblivion, we should not at the same time forget the man who wrote it. I propose that a resolution be introduced in the General Assembly to make Bland an honorary citizen of Virginia. An official plaque
