from Harrisonburg State Teachers College in 1925, the school was both elementary and high school and was located where the Emporium stands today.

She began teaching sixth, seventh and eighth grades and coaching girls basketball. In the 15 years she coached girls basketball her teams were undefeated. They did not have a bus to take them to games so she took them in her car.

When she became principal of Sperryville Elementary School it was then only a part time job. She still taught seventh grade math, English and physical education.

In 1969 she became principal of the new Rappahannock County Elementary School, which was a full time position, and she left the classroom.
