last March to which the Flint Hill rescue squad responded, with longtime friends Rescue Captain Charlotte Tummeyer and Karla Miller in the ambulance, Janice knew she wanted to join. She said that Charlotte and Karla are like mothers to her. "I like to help people. I don't like to see people hurt," she said, "I want to repay a favor and be there if something happens to them or their kids."
Janice plans on taking the EMT class later this year and firefighting later on. Her dad Wayne is a firefighter and she said, "I want to follow in my daddy's footsteps.” She also highly praises Fire Chief C.W. Blosser. "He really takes to all the junior members,” she said.
Mike Williams, a resident of Chester Gap who was one of the featured firefighters in the first article of this series in last week's Rappahannock News, runs fire and rescue in Flint Hill and Chester Gap. His dad, Bruce, also is a member with Flint Hill.
Mike said that in the last month he has run about 13 EMS calls each for Flint Hill and Chester Gap, and close to five fire calls for each. The last fire he went to was in Chester Gap for a chimney fire, where it was his job to clean out the woodstove, and run equipment back and forth from the fire truck, such as ladders and hoses.
Another Chester Gap resident, Kristi Hudson, is currently running rescue calls in Flint Hill. The 17year-old RCHS senior recently finished an EMT class and runs on res
