at the same time and artificially inseminating the cows, Armistead can influence the stretch of time over which the herd will calve.
“A cow cycles every 21 days,” he noted. “I only give my cows three heat cycles — 65 days of exposure. All calves are bom within the same time period. About 65 percent of the cows (become pregnant) on the first heat cycle, about 20 percent from the second, and 15 percent from the third. That gives me 170 calves within 60 days.”
The benefits of this compressed birthing period are three fold — reduced labor costs associated with prenatal care and delivery; calves bom early and reaching market weight at about the same time; and an estimated additional calf per cow over a 10-year period. Because the benefits are so strong, Armistead is considering cutting the breeding period to only two heat cycles.
