The ladybugs, or ladybird beetles as they are called in England, have two defenses. One is to rollover and play opossum instead of flying away when threatened. The other defense is to eject an unappealing kind of saliva from their joints that is distasteful to predators, says Dr. William Robinson, an entomologist at Va Tech. This is common to many beetles and even grasshoppers. Most books describe it as blood, but Robinson refutes this idea, calling it saliva.
With their skunk-like defense, these small colorful and distinctively marked bugs do not have to move quickly to avoid predators and the odor becomes much stronger if there is a large group rather than solitary individuals. In the western mountain states, where spectacular massings have occurred for years, one massing was found that was estimated to contain 750 million individuals.
