Armistead also recognized the value of two fairly new marketing programs. The VCA “purple tag” program identifies cattle that have been raised under controlled conditions and meet specific medical and management requirements. For example, no shots may be given in the animals’ hips or hindquarters because they scar the muscle. All animals must be preconditioned so that they will eat out of a trough, and all sires have to meet certain Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) for weaning and yearling weights. Because Armistead uses Ginger Hill bulls and other prominent studs through the Angus AI program, all Flying A herdsires qualify. A veterinarian or extension agent must certify the animals and there is a small fee required to purchase the tag itself.
