puff up their feathers and appear as if ready to make some profound wild announcement. All that results is an innocuous fleep. Other vocal efforts sound like squeaky gates. To top it off, their yellow eyes give them a malevolent look, as if they are contemplating evil. This spring I am sorely tested by grackles.
Our plywood platform feeder, 12 x 24 inches, is nailed to the railing at the top of the steps leading up from the back yard. This is our bird feeding station along with a domed plastic Droll Yankee seed dispenser hanging from a limb of the Norway maple. Seed is also scattered on a wide stone wall under the feeder for Juncos and the native sparrows that prefer foraging there. Chickadees and titmice ignore the plastic feeder when sunflower seeds are more accessible on the platform.
Up until a week ago the chickadees and titmice had no choice but to snatch seeds from the plastic hopper. Three or four grackles were on the feeder. They made quick work of a coffee can full of seeds that would have served cardinals,
