Until the animals are butchered, they remain Armistead’s property. He will receive money, minus feed yard care and management costs, after the animals are sold to a packing company. The feed yard also reports the animals’ daily weight gain throughout the process. This report-back feature is the foundation of the program. It is the only way, short of onfarm butchering, for the farmer to find out the quality of his end product.
“I’m going to do this next year, and again,” said Armistead. “Pretty soon, I’ll know what I’ve got.” By using this information to help him select or cull animals from his breeding program, he aims at having the finest herd in the country. “We believe we have the most contended cows. We want to expose (them) to the stifiest competition and see how (they) perform.”
