It worked! Grackles descended to the well cover in a black cloud; there they shoved and squeaked at each other as they feasted on the corn. The feeder was left to what Lee Trott calls the “usual crowd” a welcome gathering Qf all the birds mentioned above plus our three native sparrows, the elegant tree sparrow, one field sparrow, chipping sparrows and a pair — now always together — of song sparrows.
After a few days I became aware that the grackle population had doubled! No doubt word had gotten around that 522 Zachary Taylor Highway is the best place for a meal of cracked corn. Compare this to the popularity of Four and Twenty Blackbirds, just up the street. I am sure the grackles view my cracked corn in the same light as we humans do that excellent restaurant. It is a splendid place to have a meal.
Incidentally, the four and twenty blackbirds in the nursery rhyme were probably starlings. That however, is another story.
Grackles quickly polish off cracked corn on the well covering and head straight back to the platform feeder. It has been impossible for me to keep enough food out to feed all hungry grackles. It occurs to me that some sort of hopper might be the answer. This would be one in which I could place many pounds of cracked corn and let it be dispensed to the grackle crowd as they eat it. That is my next search.
For now, I am on my way to scatter cracked corn on the cement well covering.
