BEN VENUE — Though the speedy optimum time set at Old Dominion’s hunter pace wasn’t matched by any of the 30-plus pairs competing, the host hunt came closest with Jack Hutcheson on De De and Tim Colgan on Is A Pro just 16 seconds slow over the threemile, 20-fence course.
Despite some trouble at the first fence, a timber fence on the race course at Ben Venue in Rappahannock County, Hutcheson and Colgan sped around the course the fastest of all the optimum time pairs.
Hutcheson rode joint master Douglas Hytla’s gray mare, while Colgan rode his wife Dawn’s bay mare Is A Pro.
Divisional honors in the hunter paces are still up for grabs, as no one pair has won more than one pace; just two remain in the series.
Janet O’Keefe and Carole Boniface of Rappahannock added to their slight lead with a third place at Old Dominion, while sisters Nicole Balding and Katrina Bills moved into second with a second at Old Dominion.
This is the first time in recent years Old Dominion has hosted fast time, and the absence of series leaders Joe Kincheloe and Michael Brown — competing in Sunday’s oldfashioned race in Middleburg — opened the door for a win by Nicola Colebrook-Robjent and Josh Beavers. The Middleburg-Orange County
