Supervisors trim school budget, attempt
to level raises for school employees
The Rappahannock Board of Supervisors get a
hand this week for slicing off a total of $231, 957.79
from this year’s proposed county school budget.
While many are no doubt disappointed the budget did not pass as proposed there are also many who are happy it did not. The supervisors had to weigh all those factors in making their decisions.
With the amount the supervisors intend to put back into the school budget to cover a 3.75 percent raise for school bus drivers, food service workers, maintenance personnel and teachers aids, the cut will actually amount to around $80,000 to $85,000 out of local spending according to John McCarthy. This translates to about one and a half cents on the tax rate.
The supervisors will look at ways to cut approximately another $30,000 or so from the remaining portion of the county budget when they meet next month. That would result in a tax rate of 81 cents and will equalize the tax rate for this year.
The supervisors are also erring on the side of caution with regards to the expansion of the high school and future capital improvements. Supervisors Mike Massie and Roger Welch volunteered to work with the school board to form a plan for future expansion needs.
