requires constant attention. On hatching, a young bird is at the mercy of outside temperatures and must be protected from extremes of both cold and heat.
Later, on about the eighth day, the bird’s internal thermostat begins to function and they become warm-blooded like humans. The initial, cold-blooded, condition reflects back to their remote ancestors, reptiles, which are cold-blooded throughout their lives.
Hatchlings are constantly fed by both parents. The food — usually an insect beaten into edibility — is poked far down into the throat of a young bird; there a muscle is located that triggers off swallowing. Young birds continue to open their mouths and beg for food even after their stomachs are full and they can no longer swallow.
In my years of studying and photographing birds I have spent many happily tense hours sitting in a blind waiting to capture nest behavior on film. A sequence of actions and reactions occurs when adults appear at the nest to feed the young.
