The board funded enough to cover the cost of renovations needed for this year and matching costs, but was reluctant to fund more until the state monies come in. They will make appropriations for those additional items at a later date.
The budget was approved at $7,114,305. Some funds will be added for the increase of 3.75 percent in salary to support personnel. County Administrator John McCarthy said that adjustment will result in a reduction of about $80,000 to $85,000 from the school budget and the board will try to reduce the remainder of the county budget by $30,000 or so in order to equalize the tax rate this year.
In other business:
• The board heard a report on the landfill from Jeff Fantell, project engineer and Butch Johnson, of Joyce Engineering. They are waiting on the permanent request to close cells one and two. New and tougher restrictions at the DEQ last year caused a delay. He discussed alternate packages for caps for the cells and brought samples of materials to show the supervisors. The alternate cap they are proposing would save the county money. They hope to have written approval from the DEQ on their ruling soon.
• The board passed a resolution to add Four Springs Lane to the VDOT Six Year Road plan.
• McCarthy reported that the current forms and computer software for the personal property tax on cars must be redone due to the new car tax regulations. The state has said they will reimburse counties for the cost.
• The budget work session for the county will be held May 25 at 7 p.m.
• Raymond Brown was approved as the new member -to the County Planning Commission for the Jackson District.
