The news from Virginia’s only horse racing track, Colonial Downs, gets worse all the time.
The company that owns it lost nearly $1 million in the first quarter, attendance at the present harness racing meeting isn’t very good, and there seems no immediate prospect of getting voters to approve new off-track betting facilities that are vital if the track is to succeed.
Harness racing isn’t my cup of tea, though I might get down to the track a time or two during the current meeting just for a bit of recreation. Besides that, I’m not sure exactly how long 111 have any opportunity to attend races and bet horses at a state track. At this point, you’re probably wondering what horse racing has to with Virginia politics?
