Union Bankshares Corporation, a bank holding company with its principal offices at 211 North Main Street, Bowling Green. Virginia 22427, intends to apply to the Federal Reserve System for permission to acquire by merger 100 percent of Rappahannock Bankshare, Inc., a bank holding company with its principal offices at 257 Gay Street, Washington, Virginia 22747. The Federal Reserve System considers a number of factors in deciding whether to approve the application, including the record of performance of the banks owned by Union and Rappahannock in helping to meet local credit needs.

You are invited to submit comments in this application, in writing, to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, P.O. Box 27622, Richmond, Virginia 23261. The comment period will not end before June 8, 1998, and may be somewhat longer The Federal Reserve Board's Policy Statement regarding notice of applications may be found at 12 C.F.R. 262.25.
