But mechanization alone does not guarantee success. The Antonys remember how people came to their aid when Hurricane Fran knocked out their electricity and disabled their irrigation system in 1996. Richard was in Korea working on an Army project. The backup generator he purchased before he left snapped a drive gear, rendering it useless.
“Everybody was trying to help me,” said Sandra. The local fire company brought hoses to run from their pond, but the distance was too great. People brought generators, but they weren’t powerful enough either. “The power lines broke and pulled down the poles. The wires were arcing and set the woods on fire,” bringing the power company, but even they couldn’t get the electricity repaired in time to save the plants.
Finally, a nurseryman in Culpeper, a close friend-of-afriend, offered a generator that would do the job. Without their help, Richard added, “We would have lost our entire nursery and seed stock and would have gone out of business.”
This kind of mutual caring and support across a community is what brought the family to Rappahannock. Said Antony, his voice breaking a bit, “Location is everything.”
