Piedmont offers individualized attention that regular classrooms can’t offer, he said. Several times each year the teachers call the students’ homes to discuss their progress* and to invite the parents to visit the school.
The cost of each student’s education would be considerably less if more students attended, he said. While the school use to have an attendance of over 500 students, now it is down to only 300 students. Both Rappahannock and Orange counties have given their notices to withdraw from Piedmont.
Over the years, Norman said, he became more aware of differences in students. A principal who once overheard teachers complaining that they wished they had better students, responded with, “parents send the best students they have.” His comment touched Norman who said,
