The adult approaches the nest full of young and often makes a soft clucking sound. This sound, plus the slight jouncing of the nest, results in three or four wide open mouths. Apparently the parents do not count in the sense that we do for the food is poked into the widest mouth reaching the highest. In the event that this young one has a full stomach and cannot swallow the parent gives it to another nestling.
After each feeding, the nest is given a through cleaning. The metabolic rate of a young bird is rapid. A young bird that weighs two grams at hatching will weigh 100 grams as an adult; this often occurs in only three weeks. Excrement is constantly being expelled in the form of a membranous sac, a sort of disposable diaper. The adult often plucks this from the rear end of the young as it emerges. For a few days after hatching this sac contains so many nutrients that adults swallow it. Later it will be carried far from the nest and dropped. Were it allowed to collect under the nest, it would attract predators.
