measure our children’s learning in a new way. In the month of October, the state board will release some preliminary student and school evaluation information.
Past state accrediting programs have been based on such things as class size, number of high school courses, teacher licensing, and other “input” factors are still included; however, “outcome” factors are now also included. The “outcome” factors will be determined on the basis of student achievement on the Standards of Learning Tests for grades 3,5, 8 and high school end-of-course tests. Tests were administered for the first time last spring. These tests will establish a beginning point for our continued growth. The changes described are nothing short of revolutionary. Prior to the new standards, the Commonwealth of Virginia (like all other states) had established compulsory stur dent attendance laws. Learning was optional. Under
