Fannie Coates Carpenter, 99, of the Orange County Nursing Home, formerly of Haywood died on Friday, Oct. 2 in Orange.
She was bom Oct. 4, 1898 in Duet, Madison County. She was the daughter of the late William Edward Coates and Aubrey Blankenbaker Coates and wife of the late Thomas Grady Carpenter.
Mrs. Carpenter was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Haywood.
She is survived by a daughter Mary Florence Utz and husband Lindsay of Haywood; a son Herbert Grady Carpenter and wife Mary Lee of Springfield; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Additional survivors include two sisters Mildred C. Matthews of Orange and Frances C. Thornhill of Boston and ten brothers Charles Elmer Coates of Brandy, Robert Coates, James Coates, Joseph Coates, Charlie Coates, Delma Coates and John Coates, all of Culpeper, Clayton Coates of Portsmouth, Hugh Coates of Haywood and Paul Coates of Etlan.
She was predeceased by two brothers Ebert Coates and Ray Coates and three sisters Neomi Southard, Vera Tanner and Virginia Ruth Curtis.
